Ricklundgården
Museum with gueststudios

Wiew from the studio.

Saxnäs and it's surroundings.

Saxnäs is located in southern Lapland. It is the crossroads where two cultures meet: the indigenous Lapps and the settlers. This is the place where mythology and folklore mix; it is where many artists, such as Asger Jorn, have sought and found their inspiration and energy.

The area around Saxnäs is grandiose. There are hiking and ski trails to suit your taste; take an easy outing, or an adventurous trek.

Fatmomakke, with its age-old tradition as a meeting place for the Lapps is close by. Saxnäsgården is right next door to Ricklundgården. There is a restaurant, gym, swimming pool, herb bath, and more. They also rent out skiing equipment and canoes. Beyond this, Saxnäs has a school, a church, a general store, taxi service, and snowmobiles for rent.

                                                Ricklundgården

In the '40s, Emma and Folke Ricklund created Ricklundgården with its Mediterranean atmosphere.
It is now a museum with studios for its guests to work in. Today, artists and proponents of the arts have a year-round retreat where they can pursue their interests.
Folke Ricklund designed the house himself. Everything, down to the most minute detail has been worked out by Folke and Emma Ricklund. The building is a very personal mixture of functionalism and Mediterranean-style architecture.
The unique art collection, souvenirs from travels, in this homey atmosphere make Ricklundgården worth seeing. Emma Ricklund was a pioneer in the tourist business with her pension, Saxnäsgården. Many artists, authors, and photographers have found their way to Saxnäs and to its unique surroundings. The art collection at Ricklundgården is proof of an exciting epoch that left behind it a cultural heritage in the small mountain village of Saxnäs.

The studios

Ricklundgården has two studios. The larger of them is in the main building and the smaller one is in the guest house (built in 1992).
The main studio is 50 m2. The height of the ceiling is 5 m. There are two bedrooms and three beds. The kitchen is completely equipped. There is a TV, a radio, and a pay telephone. There is a shower in the basement. Extra beds are available.
The studio at the guest house is 25 m2. There is a kitchenette and a pleasant living room. The small bedroom has two beds. Also, at your disposal is a shower, a radio, a TV, and a pay telephone. Laundry facilities are in the main building. Extra beds are available.

Folke Ricklund also built a small studio right in the mountains, now called the Satsfjäll Studio. This provides a one-of-a-kind chance to work in the middle of natural surroundings. This studio is also open to the general public for over-night stays. There is a road to the foot of Satsfjället. From there, it takes about one hour to get to the studio either on foot or on skis.
Why not try staying in the kåta (tent-like Lappish dwelling)? It's comfortably situated right next to the Ricklund residence.

YEAR
- This is a project for young artists.
For many years, artists have been fascinated by the beauty of the mountains with their evasive dance of shadows and alternating hues. Many are they who have tried to catch the challenge of the mountain landscape; others have spent their time trying to interpret the meaning of the bogs and the secrets they hold. There is a legacy here that will continue to fascinate and inspire.

YEAR open the doors.

¨ to cross-cultural and international joint efforts.
¨                    to join hands in a common cause with mutual goals.

¨                    to get acquainted with the environment and culture in Lapland.
